The rainstorms that came through our area this past weekend could not dampen the enthusiasm of the many supporters, partners, and friends who attended Friends of the Family’s Grand Opening Celebration on Sunday. As one guest put it, “You don’t get to walk through a 40-year dream come true very often! I couldn’t miss this!”
Guests were greeted with the joyful sounds of Masanga Marimba, a local band well known for their celebratory eclectic world music. As the children danced to the music and displayed their own musical talent on the marimbas, tour guides escorted guests through the facility, explaining how the different spaces will be used to provide family support and development services and a welcoming comfortable environment for all activities.
Sunday marked the unveiling of the dedication signage for all the rooms and spaces that our generous supporters have sponsored as part of our “New Home” fundraising campaign over the past two years, including the engraved pavers embedded in the pathway to our children’s outdoor classroom. Former LA County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky sponsored that space so it is named in his honor as “Zev’s Nature Classroom.” A representative from current Supervisor Shelia Kuehl’s office, Benita Trujillo, participated in the ribbon cutting ceremony to officially open the outdoor classroom. We were honored to also have Amanda Mejia, a representative from the office of Mayor Eric Garcetti, attending the event. The day concluded with a short ceremony honoring “Parthenia Heroes,” those individuals and businesses who played significant roles in kicking off our “New Home” fundraising campaign, securing and renovating the facility, and building and landscaping our family gardens and Zev’s Nature Classroom.
We are so pleased to have received universally positive feedback about our new home with guests consistently remarking that it feels friendly, colorful, welcoming, well-designed, and happy! That is exactly the kind of home Friends of the Family has always deserved and we have no doubt that it will greatly enhance the impact the organization can have in our community. We offer our abiding gratitude to all who helped bring this dream into reality!
If you couldn’t make it to the Grand Opening Celebration, please feel free to stop in for a visit any time. Nothing pleases us more than sharing our new home!
